Name:   Dr. Eric J. Dierks

Description:   A founding partner of HNSA, Dr. Dierks earned his medical and dental degrees from the University of Louisville. One of just a handful of American surgeons to be Board Certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery as well as Otolaryngology (Head and Neck Surgery), Dr. Dierks completed his residency in these specialties in Delaware and in Texas. Dr. Dierks’ surgical practice consists of Head and Neck Cancer and Reconstructive Surgery, Craniomaxillofacial Trauma, Cleft Lip/Palate Surgery, and Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery including complex dental implant surgery. He has an extensive experience in zygomatic dental implants. Dr. Dierks is an Affiliate Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at OHSU. He has published over 120 journal articles and book chapters on his various areas of interest and is frequently called upon to lecture both nationally and around the world. Before he became a doctor, Dr. Dierks worked his way through college as an auto mechanic and is still interested in automotive technology. Married with two grown children, Dr. Dierks also enjoys traveling and spending quality time with his family.

Name:   Dr. R. Bryan Bell

Description:   Dr. Bell is a fellowship-trained head and neck oncologic/oral and maxillofacial surgeon whose clinical practice, teaching and research is devoted entirely to head and neck cancer, trauma and corrective jaw (orthognathic) surgery. He holds a dental degree from Creighton University, a medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he also completed his surgical training. Dr. Bell is currently Co-Director of the Providence Head and Neck Cancer Program and Clinic at the Providence Cancer Institute, where he also directs a Fellowship in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery; a Member of the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute at the Robert W. Franz Cancer Center; Attending Trauma Surgeon at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center; and Clinical Professor at Oregon Health & Science University. He has served in leadership positions with numerous professional societies, boards, foundations and committees and is Past President of the American Academy of Craniomaxillofacial Surgeons and the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Bell has pioneered the use of virtual surgical planning in head and neck surgery, trauma and orthognathic surgery and was one of the first surgeons on the U.S. west coast to perform transoral robotic surgery for oropharyngeal and laryngeal cancer. Dr. Bell has fostered an institutional commitment to head and neck cancer immunotherapy research through numerous collaborations with scientists at the Earle A. Chiles Research Institute. His research efforts are currently directed toward promoting application of novel findings to the clinic, enhancing tissue collection for scientific interrogation, and the design of novel therapeutic trials in head and neck cancer. His work has resulted in over 150 scientific articles and book chapters, and he is co-editor of two major textbooks, including Oral, Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery; and Current Therapy in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. In addition, he has given hundreds of invited lectures, highlighting his interests in virtual surgical planning, transoral robotic surgery and immunotherapy for head and neck cancer. A Texas native, Dr. Bell enjoys spending time with his wife and two children. When not working, Dr. Bell also enjoys music, golf, fishing and travelling.


Name:   Dr. Allen C. Cheng

Description:   Dr. Cheng earned his medical and dental degrees at the University of California, San Francisco. After completing his residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, Dr. Cheng finished fellowship training in both Head and Neck Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He is a Board Certified Diplomate of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Cheng’s practice is comprised of Oral Surgery (dental extractions, dental implants, bone grafting, soft tissue grafting), Head and Neck Oncology, Head and Neck Reconstruction, Maxillofacial Trauma, and Jaw Alignment (Orthognathic) Surgery. His research interests are focused in the areas of Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Cheng currently serves as the Section Chair of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Medical Director of the Legacy Good Samaritan Oral/Head and Neck Cancer Program. He is also an Assistant Professor at the OHSU School of Dentistry in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. When he’s not happily helping patients, Dr. Cheng enjoys spending time with his wife and their two children. When he and his wife are not working, they are constantly looking for child-friendly activities to consume the limitless energy exhibited by their two children.


Name:   Dr. Ashish A. Patel

Description:   Dr. Patel earned his dental and medical degrees from New York University. Following his residency training, he completed fellowship training in Head and Neck Surgical Oncology and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. Dr Patel is board certified in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and holds a Certificate of Added Qualification (CAQ) in Head and Neck Oncology and Reconstructive Surgery. Dr. Patel’s practice includes oral surgery (dental extractions, bone grafting, dental implants), surgical oncology (removal of benign and malignant tumors of the head, neck, mouth and throat), facial reconstruction, trauma surgery, sleep surgery, and corrective jaw surgery. Dr. Patel lives in Portland with his wife and two children. He enjoys listening to music, playing guitar, staying fit, cooking, and exploring the great outdoors with his family.


Name:   Dr. R. Sterling Hodgson

Description:   Dr. Hodgson, a native Oregonian, and second-generation ear, nose & throat surgeon received his Bachelor’s degree in Biology from Oregon State University in 1979. He then attended Oregon Health Sciences University to receive his M.D. in 1983. He completed a general surgery internship at Michigan State, then returned for residency training at OHSU which he completed in 1988. In 1989, he received sub-specialty fellowship training in otology, neurotology, and skull base surgery with the Portland Ear Medical Group. Dr. Hodgson has been in private practice as a Neurotologist since 1989. As such, he limits his practice to the diagnosis and management of disorders that affect the ear, its surrounding structures, and their relationship to the brain. This includes medical and surgical treatments for disorders affecting hearing and balance, facial paralysis, management of chronic ear disease, infections and tumor growths of the skull base. In keeping with state of the art care, Dr. Hodgson is also trained in implantable hearing technologies such as cochlear implants, bone conduction implants (Baha) and middle ear implants, including The Esteem. His office also offers full-service hearing aid fittings by a licensed and certified audiologist. Dr. Hodgson is board certified with the American Board of Otolaryngology. His professional society memberships include the American Academy of Otolaryngology/Head & Neck Surgery, the American Medical Association, the Oregon Medical Association and the Medical Society of Metropolitan Portland. He has been the otologist for the craniofacial disorders clinic at Randall Children’s Hospital at Legacy Emanuel since its inception in 1995. This is a volunteer position serving children with cleft lip and palate, as well as other genetic disorders involving the head and neck. In his free time, Dr. Hodgson enjoys a variety of activities with his wife and two sons. Current interests include running, weight training, skiing, reading, travel and the occasional jigsaw puzzle.


Name:   Dr. Caitlin B. L. Magraw

Description:   Dr. Magraw is a board-certified, fellowship-trained surgical specialist in Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery with expertise in the correction of congenital, developmental, and acquired surgical problems of the skull, face, jaws and mouth from infancy through adulthood. This includes the management of patients with cleft lip and palate, craniosynostosis (abnormal head shape), craniofacial syndromes, Pierre Robin sequence, skeletal facial deformities requiring orthognathic/corrective jaw surgery, and craniomaxillofacial traumatic injuries. Her goal is to provide personalized, compassionate and comprehensive care to meet each child’s unique needs. She is originally from the Washington, D.C. area and completed her undergraduate education at Georgetown University. Educated in both dentistry and medicine, she received her dental degree from Columbia University and medical degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She completed her residency in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and internship in General Surgery at the University of North Carolina Hospitals in Chapel Hill, North Carolina. Following residency, she completed fellowship training in Pediatric Cleft and Craniofacial Surgery at the Orlando Health Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children in Orlando, Florida, which is associated with one the of largest and busiest Neonatal Intensive Care Units in the country. She is a surgeon on the Randall Children’s Hospital Cleft and Craniofacial Disorders Team and a Clinical Assistant Professor in the OHSU Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dr. Magraw spends her free time with her husband and their two dogs, a Bernese Mountain Dog and Great Pyrenees. She also enjoys traveling, hiking, working out and exploring new restaurants.


Name:   Dr. Baber N. Khatib

Description:   Dr. Khatib joins us from the Medical University of South Carolina where he served as an assistant clinical professor in the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. While at MUSC, he performed the first “Jaw in a Day” procedures in South Carolina, including one of the youngest patients to ever receive the revolutionary procedure on her mandible. These procedures were featured on the front page of the “Post and Courier” and local news stations. Dr. Khatib earned his dental degree from the University of Alberta, Canada and his Medical Degree from the University of California Davis. After his residency at the University of California San Francisco, he completed fellowship training through Legacy Emanuel Hospital and Randall’s Children’s Hospital in Adult and Pediatric Advanced Craniomaxillofacial and Trauma Surgery. Following this he completed an additional fellowship through Providence Cancer Center in Head and Neck Oncologic and Microvascular Reconstructive Surgery. He is board certified by the American and Canadian Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Dr. Khatib’s practice includes Adult and Pediatric oral surgery (dental extractions, wisdom teeth removal, bone grafting, dental and zygomatic implants), oral head and neck microvascular reconstructive surgery, pathology, trauma surgery, sleep surgery, and corrective jaw surgery. In addition, he is the site director for education at Legacy Emanuel hospital for the Maxillofacial surgery service. He lives in Portland and when not at work can be found cooking with his wife, staying active, and enjoying Portland’s great food scene!


Name:   Christina Fratangelo

Title:   CRNP

Description:   Christina Fratangelo is an Acute Care Nurse Practitioner new to HNSA. She graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and went on to get her Doctorate of Nursing Practice degree from the University of Pittsburgh and is nationally board-certified. Christina comes to HNSA from the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center with over 15 years’ experience in ENT, specifically head and neck cancer. She began her career as an RN working on the surgical unit with patients undergoing head and neck surgery. She continued her career as a Nurse Practitioner where she specialized in the care of patients with both benign and malignant diseases of the head, neck and oral cavity.
